Certified Insurance Counselor

The Program
The insurance industry's premier, proven source for practical, real-world education since 1969. Our institutes provide current, practical course content, applicable to your everyday work. These courses provide curriculum tailored to our region, and are approved for Montana continuing education credit. Expect to learn a lot, and use your new knowledge to begin doing your job better immediately.

The five CIC institutes are:
  • Personal Lines
  • Commercial Casualty
  • Commercial Property
  • Life & Health
  • Agency Management
Each of the five, classroom-based CIC institutes lasts 2-1/2 days. CIC exams are developed and administered onsite at the end of each course. 

Who should attend?
The content of CIC Institutes is advanced and the examinations challenging, so you should have a good, fundamental understanding of the subject matter before attending. We recommend attendees:
  • Be a licensed agent, broker, adjuster, or solicitor; or
  • Have at least two years of full-time experience in the insurance industry or as a risk management practitioner; or
  • Have served as a full-time insurance faculty member at an accredited college or university.
How do I earn the designation?
To earn this prestigious designation, you need to attend and pass teh exam for each of the five institutes. You'll have five years from the date you pass your first exam.

How do I keep the designation?
To retain your designation, you must attend at least one of the following programs in its entirety annually:
  • Any one of the five CIC institutes
  • James K. Ruble Seminar*
  • A Dynamics of Selling program** 
  • A Dynamics of Sales Management program**
  • A Dynamics of Company/Agency Relationships (company personnel only) program**
  • A Certified Risk Manager course**
* To attend a Ruble Seminar you must be a dues-paid member of CIC or CRM.
** To receive update credit, you must be a dues-paid member of CIC or CRM. The Dynamics courses are currently not offered in Montana, but may be taken out of state. Sales courses typically receive reduced or no CE credit.

  • Insuring Commercial Property
  • Insuring Personal Residential Property
  • Insuring Personal Auto Exposures
  • Agency Operations
Who should attend?
Course content thoroughly addresses all aspects of risks and exposures. These courses are very beneficial for new agents, as well as newer agency and company personnel.

How do I earn the designation?
You must complete all five courses and pass the exams within three years.

How do I keep the designation? 

To retain your designation, you must attend at least one of the following programs in its entirety annually:    
  • Any one of the five CISR courses
  • Any one-day William T. Hold seminar
  • A Dynamics of Service program1
  • An entire 2-½ day CIC institute or CRM2
  • Eight consecutive hours of a CIC Institute or CRM Course1
  • Dynamics of Selling, Dynamics of Sales Management, or Dynamics of Personal Insurance3
1. Counts as one update credit if you are a dues-paid CISR. 2. Earns two years of update credits. 3. Counts as two years of update credits if you are a dues-paid CISR. The Dynamics of Selling, Sales & Personal Insurance courses are currently not offered by MIEF in Montana, but may be taken out of state. Sales courses typically receive reduced or no CE credit.
Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist

The Program

The AFIS Designation is the foremost professional designation for specialists in the agricultural and farm insurance industry. The AFIS designation will introduce producers/underwriters to the Farm/Ag industry, and is the perfect solution to train and test for comprehension. For experienced agents and underwriters, the AFIS designation affords the opportunity to be recognized for achieving a measurable standard of understanding of Farm and Agribusiness Risks. There are three parts of the designation which can be taken in any order.

How do I earn the designation?
You must attend the course study for each of the AFIS parts. Each part consists of two days of classes and an exam administered online at your convenience. You will need to pass all three exams within 5 years.

How do I keep the designation?
Once you earn the designation, you have two update requirements:  
  1. Annually complete any CE Seminar or Farm Conference offered by your Big I State Association (6 CE)
  2. Every three (3) years from the date  you received the AFIS designation, you must attend an AFIS class.
