FEDERAL LEGISLATORS

Although insurance is a state-regulated industry, federal legislation can affect the treatment of insurance and financial services products at the state level.

IIABNJ's national organization, Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA), with an office on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, protects the interest of IIABA members and consumers by lobbying for or against legislation and regulation. IIABNJ works closely with our national staff through our grassroots contacts and by participating in the annual IIABA Legislative Conference each spring.

Federal Legislative Agenda
Below is a partial list of pressing issues being worked on at the federal level. For additional information visit IIABA's Government Affair page (note: you must be logged in to view this information).

  • Opposition to a repeal of the Mc-Carran-Ferguson limited antitrust exemption.
  • Reform and modernization of state insurance regulation as opposed to creating an optional federal charter.
  • Continuation and reform of the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • Natural Disaster Risk solutions to assist in maintaining a market place in areas subject to various disasters.
  • Tax treatment for intangible assets when a small business is purchased.
  • Long Term Extension of the Tax Cuts/Tax Treatment, especially in the area of Estate Taxes.
  • Protection of Agents in the Implementation of Health Care Reform to assure consumer protection in the purchase of insurance.

Federal Legislature and Government
Occasionally, IIABNJ and/or IIABA will request that members contact Congress in order to express support or opposition to pending legislation affecting the insurance industry. If you are unsure who to contact, locate a member of the New Jersey Congressional Delegation.
