The Department issued Order #A13-106 requiring certain insurers to participate in a Mediation Program on first party, open & unresolved Sandy Claims. Bulletin # 13-07 was then issued to provide the details of the program.

Conditional Waiver of Proof of Loss (POL)
FEMA bulletin regarding changes to help rapidly process claim payments. These changes include a conditional and partial waiver that will permit the insurer to adjust and pay a loss based on the evaluation of damage in the adjuster's report instead of the signed Proof of Loss or the insured-signed adjuster's report. In addition, there is a one year extension for the insured to send a proof of loss in the event an insured believes additional amounts are owed.

Hurricane Deductible Will Not Apply
DOBI has determined that the hurricane deductible is NOT applicable to Sandy as the storm did not meet the two prong trigger. No hurricane deductible will be applied to any property claim. If any insured has a straight wind deductible, that would apply as usual.
FEMA Accepting Disaster Relief Applications
Governor Chris Christie announced on November 4th that the federal government has extended public assistance to all 21 counties in New Jersey as a result of the impact of Hurricane Sandy. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is now accepting applications from residents and business owners. Register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA(3362) or 800-462-7585(TTY) for the hearing and speech impared.

There are a few simple steps that you can take to make sure you’re dealing with an honest person. Your first and best defense is to know the most common post-disaster fraud practices.

Agents may report a claim onoine or call the Claims Service Center at 866-455-9969. Flood claims should be reported at 877-348-0552. Selective is striving to work efficiently in processing any claims that may arise.

Sandy Flood Information
Hurricane Sandy delivered a wallop to media and communications networks in the Northeast, cutting off cable networks and mobile phone coverage across a wide area. According to the FCC, 25% of cell towers are down in 10 affected states.
Agility is currently responding to 1,220 member alerts and 72 disaster declarations. Even though the storm has passed, disruptions are likely to continue through Wednesday and possibly beyond in some places. It is important for those in affected areas to remain vigilant and keep emergency communications plans intact. Some businesses not yet affected may still experience outages.
